The best scale is not simply the one with the highest capacity or smallest displayed increment. It must physically support the item, resolve the change that matters to the process, survive the environment and provide the required output or regulatory status.
Start with the weighing task and the consequence of a wrong result. Shipping checks, inventory counting, food preparation, drum weighing and selling by weight have different requirements.

Capacity, readability and useful range
Capacity is the maximum permitted load. Readability is the smallest displayed increment. A very small increment is not automatically meaningful if the item, vibration, drafts, floor movement or loading method introduces larger variation.
Define the smallest change that the process must detect and the heaviest item including containers, carts or fixtures. Ask whether tare, minimum load, accuracy class, repeatability or corner-loading performance affects the application. For counting, provide the smallest individual piece weight and expected batch size.

Platform and loading method
The load should fit and be supported as intended. An overhanging carton, unstable drum or pallet placed partly off the platform can create unsafe handling and unreliable results. Record the item footprint, loading direction and the equipment used to place it.
For floor and drum scales, assess ramp length, approach space, wheel stops, handrails or restraints where applicable, trip exposure and whether a pit installation is justified. The surrounding floor must support the scale and handling equipment.

Frequently asked questions
What capacity should an industrial scale have?
Choose capacity above the heaviest gross item, including container, cart or fixture, while preserving useful readability for the process. Avoid unnecessary excess capacity if it reduces resolution.
Is readability the same as accuracy?
No. Readability is the displayed increment. Accuracy also depends on design, calibration, installation, environment, loading and other performance characteristics.
Can I weigh a pallet on a platform smaller than the pallet?
Only if the scale is designed and installed to support the complete load correctly. Partial support and overhang can be unsafe and can affect results; confirm the loading arrangement.
Do I need a legal-for-trade scale for shipping?
It depends on how the weight is used. Internal checks may differ from a transaction where price is determined by weight. Confirm the application with Measurement Canada or an authorized service provider.
Is NTEP approval enough in Canada?
NTEP is a United States program and does not by itself establish Canadian approval for use in trade. Check the exact Measurement Canada approval and examination status.
Which scale is best for counting small parts?
A counting scale must resolve the individual piece weight reliably. Provide the smallest piece weight, typical sample size and target batch; capacity alone is not enough.
Can a stainless scale be washed down?
Stainless construction alone does not define the permissible cleaning method. Confirm the complete scale’s enclosure rating and manufacturer cleaning instructions.
Can a scale connect directly to my shipping software?
Only if the model’s interface and protocol are supported by the software or integration. Confirm and test the complete connection.
How often should a scale be calibrated?
Set an interval based on process risk, use, environment, manufacturer guidance, quality procedures and any regulatory examination requirement. Check performance after relocation, overload or repair.
